8.26.07 - UJJ Wins at BJJ Worlds!

The University of Jiu Jitsu (UJJ) had great success at this year's World Jiu Jitsu Championships held in Long Beach, CA. UJJ Co-Founder Xande Ribeiro won the heavyweight division in dominant fashion, capturing another gold medal to add to his ever growing collection. In his first match he submitted Scott Ryan with a choke from the mount. In his next match he beat the highly regarded Roberto Godoi by triangle choke submission. He followed this up by defeating Flavio Almedia by a score of 5-0. In the finals he submitted Roberto Tussa with a choke from the mount to become the 2007 World Champion in the heavyweight division.

Xande's brother and UJJ co-founder, Saulo Ribeiro, came out of retirement at the age of 33 to to compete with the 30 year olds and under in the medium heavy class. Although he was unable to win the gold, he showed he is still a dangerous threat. He submitted his first two opponents in quick fashion to find himself matched up with one of the division favorites, Tarsis Humphries of the Alliance academy. Saulo was able to beat the young phenom by several advantages. In the finals Saulo was defeated in an exciting match by Romalo Barral, leaving Saulo with the silver medal. This was Saulo’s fifth silver at the World’s to go along with his 6 gold medals, the greatest record of any jiu-jitsu fighter in history.

Saulo and Xande's student, Raphael Lovato Jr., spent some intense weeks at the University on his quest to become the new Super Heavyweight World Champion, one of only several Americans to win a gold medal in the black belt division in any weight class. Raphael won 4 matches straight on his way to the Gold in the Super Heavyweight division and competed two divisions above his natural weight class.

The girls of the University also put on terrific performances. With the UJJ team fighting under the name of Royler Gracie's school Gracie Humaita, the girls captured the title of top women's team in the World, winning several golds and silvers along the way.

All in all, an amazing performance by the competitors from the University in it's first year of existence, proving the effectiveness of Saulo and Xande's system!
